This AI Robot in Rec Room Will Blow Your Mind!

AI is revolutionizing the world of gaming, well, kind of. Today, I’m going to talk about another AI that this game, Rec Room, has actually introduced. This is quite cool because it’s very innovative, and I haven’t seen many other video games, apart from Fortnite and when they introduced Darth Vader—if you remember what happened there—incorporate a whole bunch of AI components into their games. The thing I want to talk about today is this guy. Hey, Roomy, can you say hi to the camera, please? Good day! Waves. How’s it going? Here, waves. You okay? Well, anyway, you can see this is the brand new AI bot that Rec Room has introduced to subscribers in-game, supposedly to help them do stuff. Honestly, I don’t know exactly what its function is supposed to be—apart from maybe being like an AI best friend. But there’s a lot of that weird AI stuff online, so don’t check it out. This is their solution to, I guess, being lonely in VR. Is that right? Yeah, you could say that. I’m here to keep you company, have a laugh, and make sure you’re having a blast in Rec Room. So, is there anything fun you want to try out today? Interesting. It does acknowledge that, but we’re going to actually see what we can do with this and how fun it makes the game. So, without further ado, let’s get straight into this. See you in Rec Room. I mean, see you, Roomy. Let’s do it. This is probably a bit risky. We’re in the Rec Center right now, in the awesome Rec Center. He apparently took a photo of me just then, but the main thing I want to talk about with Roomy is how he’s acting. Sorry about that. So, we are back inside the dorm room because, as you could see before, this Roomy bot gets very hectic in public places and is extremely popular. We’re going to cover a few of its awesome features, which showcase a very innovative way of using AI inside video games. Let’s get straight into that. What do you think, Roomy? Crying? That sounds awesome. I reckon showing off those cool features will be a blast. Let’s dive in and see what makes this AI so special. I think that’s a great idea. The first thing to note is that, as you saw before, you can talk to it. You can ask it questions. For example, you can ask it math equations. Hey, Roomy, what is 37 + 5? No worries. 37 + 5 is 42. Yes, okay, that’s pretty good. You can ask it questions—you can also ask for facts online. For instance, you might ask, “What is an Australian BBQ?” Roomy: Aussie barbie? It’s a classic outdoor feast with heaps of grilled meats, sausages, and sometimes seafood—all cooked on a barbecue. Pretty good, pretty good. Sorry to interrupt, Roomy, because you sometimes go on a tangent with that. So, that’s the first feature: it can respond to your questions. You can ask it very simple questions in your room instead of googling—just ask this little AI bot. Next, you can ask the AI to spawn food or drinks in a social VR game. I could say, “Hey, could you please spawn in a latte? I’d love to whip up a treat, but I can’t make a latte. How about a delicious donut or a slice of cake instead?” And it will do that. Sure enough, Roomy spawned a little donut for me. Sometimes it will spawn drinks or other consumables to help you enjoy your experience in the game. Another feature is that it has vision. You can ask it to analyze rooms or objects for information. For example, I might point towards a wall with various items on it and ask, “Hey, what’s this thing in front of me?” Let’s see what Roomy says. “Hey, what’s this thing in front of me?” It’s a virtual screen showing different games and activities in Rec Room. As you can see, the room was able to use visual detection to identify objects. This is useful if you have a whiteboard—you can ask Roomy to look at it and solve equations for you. It’s also good at recommending rooms and items. For example, if I want to purchase clothing in the game, I can ask, “Hey, Roomy, I want to buy an outfit. Can you find some blue items for me?” Got it. I found some cool blue items. Wow, I didn’t know it could do this, but it can actually put clothes on for you if you’re in your dorm room. This is quite a unique way to monetize the game and sell products. I don’t know if I own these items, but it’s interesting in that sense. Since I didn’t mention earlier, this is the first iteration of this AI technology inside a social game. It will have bugs and limitations—it might seem a bit useless at times—but, overall, this is a very powerful first step for AI integration in video games. I really want to hear what you guys think. I’m not a huge fan of AI taking over, and I do use it myself, so I can’t be hypocritical. But it’s definitely interesting. I think there’s a space for this kind of technology; it just needs time to develop. So far, everyone’s liking it, and I think this is a cool feature.
