How To Use The Select Tool With Maker Pen in Rec Room

Welcome, creators! Today, we’re diving into the exciting world of Rec Room, specifically focusing on how to master the select tool with the maker pen. This tutorial is part of our comprehensive series that began with using the create tool. If you haven’t checked out that tutorial yet, I highly recommend you start from the beginning. You can find the full playlist here.

Understanding the Select Tool in Rec Room

The select tool is a crucial feature within Rec Room that allows creators to move, copy, and personalize their environments with ease. Whether you’re tidying up after a festive event or simply organizing your creative space, the select tool makes the task manageable and efficient.

Getting Started with the Select Tool

Before diving into specifics, let’s ensure that you’re familiar with the basic setup. First, open up your maker pen and select the ‘select tool’ option. You’ll notice several functions appear that allow you to manipulate objects as needed. Key features include:

  • Select Tool Functions: Use these options to copy, paste, and perform various actions on the selected objects.
  • Select Tool Settings: Tailor the tool’s settings for precision and efficiency.
  • Snapping Tool: Perfect for aligning items accurately, especially useful in the move functions.

Hands-On Practice: Aligning Objects Properly

In our example, you’re in a bit of a post-Valentine’s Day cleanup situation. You have a batch of love heart boxes, some floating in the air and others beneath the ground due to placement mishaps. Let’s correct these using your select tool.

  1. Open your maker pen and activate the select tool.
  2. Identify the floating boxes with your mouse or VR controller and select them.
  3. Utilize the move tool (which appears as a green button) to relocate the boxes to the ground where they belong.

If some items within the boxes aren’t selected initially, you can quickly select or deselect multiple items. This function is ideal for selecting large groups but also allows precise adjustments where needed.

Deselecting and Resizing Selections

The select tool’s flexibility shines when correcting mistakes or finetuning selections. For instance, if you’ve mistakenly selected items such as the floor along with your target objects, simply deselect by pointing to the unwanted object and clicking to remove it from your selection.

A useful tip is leveraging the deselection mode. By holding down on your selection, you can activate a red bubble interface to fine-tune deselections. For smaller targets, resizing the select tool from ‘analog’ to ‘precise’ enables a highly focused selection approach, minimizing errors and maximizing efficiency.

Efficient Multitasking with Multiple Objects

The select tool is a time-saver when dealing with numerous items at once. Consider a scenario where you’ve created several structures or decorations you wish to move or align:

  • Select all desired items using the select tool.
  • Move them collectively to maintain uniformity, ensuring height and placement remain consistent.

This feature eliminates the tedious process of individual adjustments, making bulk edits streamlined and straightforward.

Video Transcript

Okay, hey everybody! It’s UnderMyCap, and welcome back to another video. Today, I’m going to be showing you how to use the select tool. This is part two of the series. If you haven’t seen how to use the create tool, I 100% recommend you start from the beginning and watch the first video. The link to that video will be in the playlist right down below. But without further ado, let’s get straight into this! So, you can see I have a bit of a mess behind me. It was recently Valentine’s Day—well, okay, it was a very long time ago. You can see I have a whole bunch of these boxes filled with love hearts, and I need to make sure that I can actually align the boxes and put them on the floor. You can see these boxes behind me; they’re floating in the air, which doesn’t make any sense because gravity exists, and the boxes should be sitting on the floor. We also have a box that is very much underground. So, we’re going to use the select tool to select and move the objects. Let’s open up our maker pen and click on select. When we click on select, we get a few options that pop up. We have select tool functions, so we can copy and paste with the select tool. We also have a few other options. Let’s move a little closer to the screen so you can see this. We have select tool functions, select tool settings, and the usual snapping, which we’ll talk about when we start moving things around. Now, let’s open up select. Once you click on select, we can start selecting. I’m going to move this menu so we can begin. You can see we have these two shapes in the air over here. Oops! Let’s get rid of that menu. We have two shapes in the air that we want to move onto the ground. So, we’re going to grab the select tool using your mouse or the trigger on your VR handheld device. We just want to select the boxes like that and use the move tool. The move tool is just the green button, which we’ll discuss in the next video. But you can use that to move objects up and down. However, you’ll notice—uh-oh—some of the objects inside the boxes weren’t selected, and there are quite a few of them. We can use the next part of the select tool, which allows us to select multiple items really quickly, as well as deselect a bunch of items just as quickly. So, the boxes are now on the floor, which is the main important part; they’re not floating in the air. The hearts are still in the air, so how are we going to select those? With your select tool, we need to first deselect what we’ve already selected. To deselect, you can either click off the boxes into the distance—like that, I just clicked off—or if you have some objects already selected with the select tool, you can just double-click on one, and it will deselect them all. Double-clicking with your mouse or with your controller will accomplish this. Now we can actually use the select tool to select a lot of objects at once by holding the trigger handle down and moving our handle around. You can see, we’ve selected the whole floor because I realized that the floor isn’t frozen, which is not good. But you can see that by holding down this trigger handle, we can select an area of objects, then deselect the floor because we don’t need that. Yes, we’ve selected that. If you accidentally grab something you didn’t mean to, you can deselect it. For example, if I grabbed the floor, you can use your trigger handle, point to the object you don’t want, and click on that—it will deselect it. Now, another thing you may have noticed is the yellow ball that pops up when selecting. If you hold it down on a selected item like this, you can start deselection mode; this changes it to a red bubble. Now, anything this red bubble touches will be deselected from your selection. Since we want these pink hearts in our selection, we’ll hold down and grab them back. This leads us to the next problem: this ball is a little too big for selecting because we’re trying to select fine objects. You can adjust the select tool by scrolling down to select tool settings. If we change the drag select size from analog (the largest size) to precise, you’ll see a tiny circle that pops up, making it really precise. For now, I’m going to set it to small, but you have various options to choose from when using the select tool. You’ll notice that now, when we start selecting, you can hardly see the bubble—it’s so tiny. You might be able to see a little bit, but I can select just the hearts individually. See, we’ve selected those hearts there and these hearts individually over here. Awesome! Now we’re going to use the move tool to move them down like this. As you saw just then, we used the select tool to move objects from the air—or multiple objects at once—down. It helps eliminate the tedious task of moving each thing individually with the move tool, and it also allows you to move a whole bunch of items at the same time. So, let’s say I want to move all of these little poles that I made. Unfortunately, I haven’t connected them all as an invention, but if I want to move a random selection, I can use the select tool like this to move everything uniformly so they are all at the same height.
